In the beginning...

Many legislative bills were being introduced to license many different health care providers. One of these bills contained language that involved Respiratory Therapists doing Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation or ECMO. Many Perfusionists in the state believed if this bill passed into law it could affect the way Perfusionists perform their duties on a daily basis.

Perfusionists began to talk around the state and that an effort to organize was needed to pursue licensing of Perfusionist in Missouri. Mr. Bob Longenecker was an AmSECT liaison in Missouri and he started contacting people who would be interested in forming a grassroots society to pursue licensure.

1995- Core group of Perfusionist are established led by Mr. Robert Longenecker. The name Missouri Perfusion Society was selected and society bylaws are written.  Society address is in St. Louis Missouri.  Membership is promoted thoughout the state.

1996- Inaugural meeting of The Missouri Perfusion Society in St. Louis Missouri. Core group members are elected into office with Mr. Longenecker elected first President.  The "Newsletter" is established as a tool to communicate with Perfusionist across the state.  Lobbyists and Board of Directors pursue licensure in Jefferson City.

1997- Second meeting of the Missouri Perfusion Society is in Kansas City Missouri. One month after the meeting Governor Mel Carnahan signs Licensure Bill for Clinical Perfusionist in front of the society's board of directors, society lobbyist and friends.  Missouri becomes the 3rd State in the USA to enact licensing of Clinical Perfusionists.  Bob Longenecker is nominated and receives AmSECT's Award of Excellence.

1998-  Advisory Commission for Clinical Perfusionist is established under the Board of Healing Arts and appointed by Governor Mel Carnahan.  The first society web site in constructed.  Amendments are added to original law pertaining to the grandfather clause.

1999- First licenses are issued.  Board of Directors approve the society logo.

2003-  Skip Russell elected second President.  Society address changed to Kansas City Missouri.  The name of the "Newsletter" is changed to "Pump Lines".  The first web site server is discontinued and a new web site is established.  Grief and Remembrance Program instituted.  Senior Perfusionist Award formalized for Perfusionists with 10 years experience.

2004-  Springfield Missouri is added to the meeting rotation.  Master Perfusionist Award established for Perfusionists with 20 years experience.

2005- St. Louis hosts 10th Annual Meeting and celebrates our 10 year anniversary . 

2006-  1st Student Scholarship Award presented.  The Perfusion Program Challenge is adopted by membership.

2007Greg Weaver elected 3rd President. Society address changed to Columbia, Missouri.  The Student Scholarship Essay Contest is established.

2008-  At the 13th Annual Scientific Meeting the Student Scholarship Essay Contest Award was presented to Andrea Berra.  The membership voted to accept the invitation of The International Consortium of Evidence-Based Practices (ICEBP) with Bob Longenecker accepting the position of our Society Representative to the ICEBP.  Official Society address changes to the location of the current president in Jefferson City, Missouri.
